This March, Above Second is proud to present DISCORDANT, the first show in Asia for Swiss artistic duo Pablo Togni and Christian Rebecchi, better known as NEVERCREW. Togni and Rebecchi began to collaborate in 1995 while attending art school in Lugano, designing graphics and illustrations for vinyls and mix-tapes. Initially influenced by 90’s hip-hop culture and the art of comics, the two began to develop their unique visual storytelling style in their grafitti work, embedding political and environmental messages in strikingly hyper-realistic large-scale works.
The distinctive style of NEVERCREW blends two and three dimensional spaces, integrating disconnected elements to convey society’s deeply conflicting reliance on both natural and mechanical systems. By casting their concepts on large public surfaces, NEVERCREW brings their messages into dialogue with the public, extending our examination of humankind’s core struggle to strike a balance between the demands of lifestyle, efficiency and our collective obligations towards our environment.
Discordant emphasises the juxtaposition of mechanical and natural elements to portray a world where mankind and nature, economy and environment, are constantly at odds with one another. Through Discordant, NEVERCREW wishes to comment on the exploitation of natural resources, pollution, and particularly overproduction and mismanagement of waste as “a signal of an imbalanced relationship with the natural system.”
We cannot think of a better place that embodies such discord than Hong Kong, and so we have teamed up with NEVERCREW to offer a limited edition print, specifically designed to raise funds for Foodlink, a local charity that offers meals to the needy and advocates against food wastage.
Biography – NEVERCREW is a Swiss duo composed of two urban artists, Christian Rebecchi and Pablo Togni. They have been working alongside each other since 1996 and have produced numerous pieces, including works of graffiti, sculpture, installations and other projects. The idea of construction and composition is fundamental to NEVERCREW’s pictorial approach – in their hyper-realistic structures, discordant elements relate together in a decidedly precarious and often forced balance. Thus, NEVERCREW’s work can be defined as a visual hybrid, combining simple graphical structures with realistic and formally complex elements, arranged among different spatial levels.
Founded in 2001 and registered in 2010, Foodlink Foundation is a registered Hong Kong charity dedicated to fighting hunger, building self- sufficiency, and fostering nutritional wellness among those in need, while simultaneously reducing food wastage in hotels and F&B outlets in Hong Kong. The vision at Foodlink Foundation is to ensure that every needy person has access to a hot, healthy meal. We collect safe-to-eat surplus food from F&B outlets all over the city and deliver to those in need. The role of Foodlink is to connect the supply to the demand as effectively as possible. The benefits are twofold – while reducing hunger we also reduce the pressure on our city’s landfills.
