Above Second is proud to present Alec Monopoly’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.

In the game of Monopoly the bank never “goes broke” and parking is always free. This welcome fantasy in the financial playground of the luxe and elite of Hong Kong takes a subversive detour as the infamous top-hatted Uncle Pennybags takes Hong Kong on a run for its money. The quest for capital gain is represented by the flippant ways of Alec Monopoly — as a game.

In the iconic pop playfulness of his nostalgic motifs, the notorious L.A. street heavyweight Alec Monopoly will take the city as his own. Alongside Richie Rich and Scrooge McDuck, these mascots from childhood that represent wealth and riches are reinvented in the works for the exhibition, “Capital Games”, to turn our gazes to the state of finance and frivolity.

Luxury Tax, a dip in the Community Chest, and the hope of making big bucks or blowing it all will be presented in his works made specifically for his Hong Kong exhibition. “Capital Games” will feature works by Alec Monopoly inspired by the financial goliath that is Hong Kong, taking from vintage newspapers and the spirit of the times during Hong Kong’s ascent as an Asian Tiger. As one of’s Top 10 Searched Artists of 2014, Alec Monopoly’s take on Hong Kong will be worth every peek and penny.

About Alec Monopoly

“Alec Monopoly” is the alias of an unidentified graffiti artist, originally from New York City. The artist has worked in the urban environments of New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Europe and throughout Asia using varied materials (including stencils, spray paint, epoxies, varnishes and newspapers) to subversively depict various iconic pop culture characters. Alec Monopoly cites his artistic origins as learning from his mother, an artist, eventually abandoning traditional academically driven art classes to pursue and individual methodology. Alec and his work have been covered by The Wall Street Journal, London Times, New York Post, Rolling Stone, Playboy Magazine, Billboard Magazine, Vibe, The Huffington Post, Complex Magazine, Juxtapoz and The Dirt Floor in addition to a myriad of art + lifestyle blogs.

His work has caught the eye of many looking towards artistic collaborations, including superstar electronic artist AVICII as well as The W Hotel, Madonna and Vitamin Water in a collaboration that saw live street art inspired renditions of a classic series of photographs Richard Corman took of Madonna in the 1980s. His solo exhibition at Mead Carney Gallery in London received high praise from Huffington Post, London Times, and completely sold out along with his Art Basel exhibition “Man Overboard” which took place on the 151-foot yacht MV Copasetic in South Beach. Having taken Art Basel Miami Beach by storm since 2012, his energy bursts forth in his first exhibition during Art Basel Hong Kong.
